If a digital photo contains unwanted elements or if its colors are all wrong, you can always edit the picture with a specialized application. In situations like this, you can either choose an expensive program and spend at least one day learning how to use it or you can opt for a lightweight alternative and start editing your images right away. A good example is the GIMP-based Seashore, which offers everything you need to adjust your pictures, including support for multiple layers and alpha channel editing. Besides the fact that it's easier to use, the application is also free.

Once you run the application, a compact window will show up, with options for creating a blank canvas. Alternatively, you can load an image from your local folders. Compared to other similar applications, Seashore has a cleaner design. Besides the main editing area, the user interface presents a layers list, a point information panel and a series of editing options, located on a toolbar.

The application's toolbar includes a clone stamp, magic wand, rectangle and circle selection tools and other familiar tools. You can use them directly on the loaded picture or on different layers, without affecting the base image. Additional options can be found in the menu bar. The application provides various controls, for alpha channel editing, for applying and adjusting various effects filters and much more.

The best part about Seashore is that even beginners can learn how to use it in no time. Its controls are well organized and easy to spot. Furthermore, you won't encounter any convoluted menus and you won't have to make any complex settings, regardless of what you intend to do with your pictures.

Pros

Seashore is lightweight and easy to use. It comes with various tools, for editing and adjusting pictures. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing.

Cons

A magic eraser tool would be a welcome addition. If you don't want to spend too much time and money on professional image editors, Seashore is the alternative you are looking for.
